PhotoCraft
An alpha Rust image editor with layered documents, masks, brushes, editable type, adjustments and PSD/PSB import and saving.
What can you do with it?
Study an AI-assisted implementation of layered image editing and scripted image operations through a native interface, CLI and documented command channel.
What should you know before using it?
Early alpha. The maintainer says it is not ready to replace Photoshop in daily professional work; typography, plug-ins and other workflows remain incomplete. Application-level PSD saves are not byte-identical round trips, even when rendering matches. AVIF reading and JPEG XL are unavailable in the reviewed source. No editing or file-fidelity tests were run in this review.
What is verified here?
Creator: ArtCraft team and contributors; creator announcement by u/ai_art_is_art
Author-reported LLM assistance; human direction and separately authored components remain.
Runtime: Inspected source commit and v0.9.0 release separately. Release assets include native Windows MSI/portable packages, a universal macOS DMG, Linux packages and a self-hosted WebAssembly archive. Windows x64 MSI and macOS DMG returned HTTP 200 to HEAD requests; files were not downloaded or executed. Reviewed application build guidance requires Rust 1.95+. No hosted interactive web demo was established.
License note: Application code is dual-licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0. Bundled assets and fonts retain their listed licenses; ArtCraft branding has separate trademark restrictions and is excluded from the code-license grant. Upstream license ↗
